On June 3 2024 at HESA 120, Dr. Julian Somers accused Dr. Bonnie Henry, Dr. Perry Kendall , Dr. Martin Schechter, Dr. Thomas Kerr, and Dr. Evan Wood of conflict of interest – not only financial conflicts in their non-profits, but in their policy influence causing mass death. None of the accused were present.
Dr. Somers named 2 non profits. one with 3 vending machines in two cities- and another with 15 kg of heroin- that as of March 2026 hasn’t been approved or used. Two of the people he named have nothing directly to do with these 2 non profits- Evan Wood’s pharma link is clinical psychedelics, and Bonnie Henry, according to Somers: “is a protege of Dr. Kendall’s and a collaborator in these misguided actions.”
When asked how these non-profits were making profits off safe supply, Dr Somers first dodged the question and later gave this answer:
I haven’t seen their financial documents, even though, as we’re aware, not-for-profits can still pay people. I’m not aware of the flow-through of funding or their success in obtaining funds in the first place.
Further on in the meeting, shadow minister of addictions Laila Goodridge uploaded a clip of Somer’s testimony, to X :

less than 5 minutes after Laila’s tweet she herself got called out:
‘ll be honest. I’m feeling pretty frustrated with the distractions that I’ve been hearing talked about today in the committee. I was checking on social media right now, and one of the committee members is already posting gotcha clips from this committee hearing in the process of the hearing happening. Is this about hearing evidence about how to save lives, or is it about your social media channels? Is it about getting hits, or is it about saving lives? Some of those distractions are worth a look and may get updated into this post later. But Dr Somers returned to HESA last week, and now my MLA is posting his claims and calling them facts- so lets try to get her in the loop. [MP Gunn to his credit is avoiding this on X, so far]
